Officially accepted my admissions offer from the Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver.

I’m going to be a big girl graduate student now. A candidate for a Master of Arts in International Development.

Last night I saw Ahmed Rashid speak at my alma mater, and spoke to several of my former professors and classmates. When I got home, I was so happy and excited.

The transition from Hendrix’s rigorous academic setting to my current situation as a minimum wage employee and Americorps volunteer was very rough. I’ve spent the last year working 50+ hours a week, going too often to happy hour at Mexican restaurants, and trying to maintain contact with friends who live worlds away.

It has been a very hard year, but also good in ways that I never imagined possible. I’ve grown professionally and personally this last year, but not academically. Last night, I remembered for the first time in a long time why I am choosing to go to graduate school. And the reason is, I love what I do. I love to ponder those seemingly intractable questions: What needs to happen in Afghanistan to make its economy viable again? How will China’s rise as an agent of development in Africa and South Asia affect international human rights norms?

These questions make my heart beat faster and make me excited to jump back into academic work. I left the lecture last night excited and inspired. I imagine this is how normal people feel after attending a poetry reading or an art gallery. I am thrilled to be attending the Korbel School in the fall, and can’t wait for a future career in international affairs. Good things will happen.
